What it usually turns out to be
On a built-in this pattern is about air, not refrigerant, four times out of five: the evaporator fan has stopped, a defrost fault has iced the coil so nothing can move through it, or the damper between compartments is stuck shut. Refrigerant is diagnosed last, under gauges, because it is the dearest answer and the least likely one.
Frost that builds on the floor or back wall is a defrost circuit problem or a door that is not sealing. The defrost side means a heater, a bimetal or a control that has stopped calling for it; the door side means a gasket gone hard in dry winter air, or a cabinet that has drifted out of level so the door no longer meets the frame square.
Scale off local water furs up a fill valve and reduces the fill, so cubes come out hollow and small before they stop altogether. The valve, the filter and the line back to the shutoff all get checked and flushed. The ice module itself is the last suspect, not the first — replacing it while the fill is short buys the same thin ice.
